10 Signs It May Be Time To Find A New Job
Posted in: Business
There are great jobs, good jobs, bad jobs and the jobs that make you want to slam your head against your cubicle desk on a daily basis.
While most people are able to take the good with the bad, when your work situation is continually awful, chances are it’s time to make a change.
While not everyone can be a rock star, video game reviewer or Lego assembly professional, you have to ask yourself how much misery you are willing to put up with before you make a move. Remember, you are in charge of your own happiness, so if you think it’s time to find a new job, it’s up to you to take action. Here are 10 tell-tale signs it’s time to pack pack up and move on.
1. No One Wants To Be Around You – Including Yourself
While there are countless miserable people around, if your job has sucked all of the joy from your life and is making you, your coworkers, and even your family miserable, there’s no question that it’s time to find something new. While work will not always be a walk in the clouds, there should be limits to how miserable you are willing to let it make you. If it has gotten to the point where you’re miserable 24 hours a day, seven days a week, you owe it to yourself, as well as everyone around you, to find something new.
2. You Dread Going To Work Each Day
While most people should be excited to tackle their work projects every day, if you’re trying to think of any reason possible not to go, there’s a problem. Think about how you feel each morning when your alarm clock goes off -- Feeling tired is fine; however, feeling full of stress and fear is a serious red flag.
3. Work Feels Like A Complete Waste Of Time
Time is an extremely valuable commodity. Sure, everyone has to work for a living, which obviously takes up a considerable amount of time. But when the job is nothing more than a means to the end, it’s a complete waste for you to continue spending your time on. This feeling means that you should find something that’s more meaningful to you and that will do you and the world some good. Make a difference, take a chance, be bold and you will be much happier as a result.
4. The Job’s No Longer Aligned With Your Set Of Values
Going to work each day at a job you dislike, simply to earn a paycheck, is one thing. But when you are in a job that is not in line with your morals or values, this can be a real issue. This could be due to greedy executives, lying coworkers, or even those who try to get by doing as little as possible, all while your hard work goes unrecognized. Ditch that place!
5. You Have A Gut Feeling You’re In The Wrong Job
While you were in high school, you likely worked part-time in fast food or at a convenience store; however, you also knew this was a temporary situation. When you enter in the real world, you will be spending 40 or more hours at your job each week. If you’ve selected a job that is just not right for you, chances are you know it. This also means it is high time to get out there and find something that will make you happy.
6. There’s No Room To Grow Or Move Up
It’s human nature to want to do better and move up. Personal growth is something that most people want to experience. If there’s no way that you can grow or move up in your current position, it is likely time to seek employment elsewhere.
7. You Have Lost The “Work Mojo”
If you are no longer motivated to do great work, it means you just don’t care. When you stop caring, it’s time to move on. After all, this means that you are not doing yourself or the business any favors. When you find that you spend more time on Pinterest, Facebook or Twitter than on the projects you need to finish at work, chances are you should look into finding something that you are truly passionate about instead.
8. It’s Starting To Affect Your Health
If you work in a dangerous environment, such as a coal mine or where there is asbestos, there is no question that the job you are doing is affecting your health. However, if you are sitting at a desk all day, this does not mean that your health is not going to be compromised either. Cases of chronic stress can have some serious negative health effects and can occur to any person, in any industry, and is something that should not be ignored.
9. You Are Able To Do Your Job Without Thinking
Do you feel like a robot – or even a monkey – when you are at work? Is the work you do able to be completed with your eyes closed? If so, chances are you are no longer challenged. This is a sign you need to volunteer to take on more responsibility or find work elsewhere to shake things up in your life a bit.
10. You Don’t Feel Appreciated
While you may not hear compliments and kudos each day from your superiors, everyone likes to have their work valued. If you are feeling taken advantage of, it may be time to move on. You should never feel completely stuck in a miserable or dead-end job; there are other options out there, options that will challenge you and help you feel valuable.
